Botulinum Toxin
Prevent or soften wrinkles by relaxing targeted facial muscles.
Learn moreTargeted treatment. Functional relief.

Neuromodulators aren't only used for cosmetic treatments. When strategically injected into specific muscles or areas, botulinum toxin can temporarily reduce excessive muscle activity or sweating and may help manage certain medical and functional concerns.
At Bloor West Medspa, medical neuromodulator treatments are provided by a Nurse Practitioner following an individualized assessment. Treatment may be considered for concerns including jaw clenching and TMJ-related muscle tension, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and persistent trapezius, neck or shoulder muscle tension.
Your assessment, treatment areas and dosing are individualized based on your symptoms, anatomy, medical history and treatment goals.
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the release of chemical signals that activate targeted muscles or sweat glands.
For concerns related to excessive muscle activity, small amounts are strategically injected into selected muscles to temporarily reduce the strength of contraction. For hyperhidrosis, treatment targets the nerve signals responsible for activating sweat glands, helping to reduce excessive sweating in the treated area.
The areas treated and amount of neuromodulator used are individualized based on your symptoms, anatomy, medical history and treatment goals. Medical treatment plans and dosing may differ significantly from cosmetic botulinum toxin.
For patients with jaw clenching, bruxism or TMJ-related muscle tension, neuromodulator can be injected into overactive jaw muscles such as the masseters. Temporarily reducing the strength of these muscles may help decrease clenching, muscle tension and associated discomfort. Treatment is individualized following assessment, as not all jaw or TMJ symptoms are caused by overactive muscles.
For hyperhidrosis, small amounts of neuromodulator are injected throughout the affected area to temporarily block the nerve signals that activate sweat glands. This can significantly reduce sweating in the treated area. Treatment may be considered for areas such as the underarms following assessment.
Neuromodulator can be used to reduce excessive activity and tension in the trapezius muscles that can contribute to cervicogenic headaches when clinically appropriate. Treatment is based on your symptoms, muscle activity and anatomy rather than simply treating the appearance of the shoulders. An assessment helps determine whether the trapezius muscles are contributing to your concerns.
The medication may be the same, but the treatment goal, muscles targeted and dosing can be very different. Medical treatment focuses on reducing symptoms related to excessive muscle or sweat-gland activity, while cosmetic treatment primarily focuses on softening expression lines.
Results are temporary and vary depending on the area treated, dose and individual response. Effects commonly last several months, with repeat treatment considered as symptoms gradually return.
Yes. Medical neuromodulator treatment begins with an assessment of your symptoms, medical history, medications, previous treatments and goals. This helps determine whether neuromodulator treatment is appropriate and allows your treatment plan and dosing to be individualized.
Individual results vary. All treatments require an in-person consultation and medical assessment to confirm they're right for you. Content on this page is for general information and is not medical advice.
